Steve Konowalchuk Throws Ceremonial First Pitch at Mariners Game

Mariners honored T-Birds for 2017 WHL Championship

SEATTLE, June 10, 2017 — Seattle Thunderbirds head coach Steve Konowalchuk threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Seattle Mariners game Saturday night against the Toronto Blue Jays as the Mariners honored the T-Birds for winning the 2017 WHL Championship.

T-Birds assistant coach Matt O’Dette was part of the celebration as he carried the Ed Chynoweth Trophy to the pitching mound with Steve.

The Mariners presented Steve and Matt with customized team jerseys. The jerseys had their names and the numbers they wore while playing hockey on the back.

Prior to Steve’s pitch the Mariners played highlights from all four playoff series the T-Birds won, culminating with Alexander True’s overtime game-winning goal in Game 6 against Regina which won the WHL Championship.

Mariners outfielder Boog Powell caught the pitch from Steve. Powell then autographed a baseball for both Steve and Matt.

The T-Birds won the Western Hockey League Championship with a first round sweep of the Tri-City Americans, a second round sweep of the Everett Silvertips, a 4-2 series win over the Kelowna Rockets in the Western Conference Championship and a 4-2 series win over the Regina Pats in the WHL Championship.

T-Birds equipment manager Trevor Heinzerling and assistant equipment manager Brent Collier were also on the field for the first pitch.

This was the second time a T-Bird has thrown out the ceremonial first pitch at a Mariners game. On August 12, 2015, Mathew Barzal threw out the first pitch. Mariners pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma no-hit the Baltimore Orioles in a 3-0 win at this game.

Mariners  Season Tickets for the WHL Champion T-Birds 2017-18 season are currently on sale. Season tickets can be purchased by calling the T-Birds office at 253-239-7825.
