Kubicek was selected in second round of the 2018 CHL Import Draft
KENT, September 1, 2018 — Seattle Thunderbirds general manager Bil La Forge today announced the team has signed defenseman Simon Kubicek to a Standard WHL Player Agreement.
The T-Birds selected Kubicek in the second round of the 2018 CHL Import Draft with the 89th overall pick.
Kubicek, a defenseman from the Czech Republic, played for his country at the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Memorial Cup in Edmonton, Alberta, in August. Kubicek played in four games for the Czech Republic but did not register a point.
“Simon is a good, young defenseman that plays well in both ends of the ice and he has all the tools to be a very effective player in the WHL,” said T-Birds head coach Matt O’Dette. “We look forward to seeing him develop in a T-Birds jersey. We were fortunate to get him with our second pick in the Import Draft.”
Last season Kubicek played 29 games last season with Ceske Budejovice in the Czech Republic U18 League and had nine goals and 10 assists for 19 points. He also represented his country playing six games at the U17 World Hockey Challenge and had three assists.
The T-Birds play their second game at the Delta Hotels Preseason Classic at Angel of the Winds Arena Saturday at 7pm against the Everett Silvertips. The Classic ends for the T-Birds on Sunday, September 2, as they play the Spokane Chiefs at 3pm.
Preseason play continues for the T-Birds at the Red Lion Hotels’ Preseason Tournament at the Toyota Center in Kennewick. The T-Birds will begin the tournament on Thursday, September 6, against the Spokane Chiefs at 3pm. Tournament play will conclude on Friday, September 7 with a matchup against the Kootenay Ice at 3pm.
The T-Birds wrap up preseason play with back-to-back games against the Everett Silvertips. They will play on Tuesday, September 11, at 7:05pm at the accesso ShoWare Center. The T-Birds will travel to the Angel of the Winds Arena on Saturday, September 15, to play the Silvertips at 7pm in their final preseason game. Tickets for the preseason game on September 11 are now on sale.
The Seattle Thunderbirds start the 2018-19 Western Hockey League regular season against the Portland Winterhawks on Saturday, September 22, at 6:05pm at the accesso ShoWare Center.
