Delnov has two goals, assist in 4-3 win over Medicine Hat
KENT, November 16, 2012 — Alexander Delnov was a member of Team Russia at the Subway Super Series on Wednesday and Thursday. Friday night he was super with two goals and an assist to the lead the Seattle Thunderbirds to a 4-3 victory over the Medicine Hat Tigers at ShoWare Center.
The T-Birds take on the Spokane Chiefs Saturday night at ShoWare Center at 7:05pm.
The first period started off with some lively action, as Seattle’s Daniel Wray and Medicine Hat’s Derek Ryckman both received five-minute majors for fighting just 2:37 into the period. Seattle’s Jesse Forsberg was called for tripping at the 12:11 mark, and the Tigers capitalized on the man-advantage to open the scoring through Boston Leier. Kyle Becker had the assist for Medicine Hat. The T-Birds received a power play chance after a hooking call on the Tigers, but they couldn’t convert and went into the intermission down 1-0.
Shots after the first period were 15-11 in favor of Medicine Hat.
Seattle (10-10-1-0) scored two goals in the second period to take the lead back from the Tigers. Seth Swenson scored his seventh goal of the year at 6:23 of the period. He received a pass from Brendan Rouse along the right boards, and skated in on the net while Connor Sanvido drove to the near post and took the Tigers defenseman with him. Sanvido provided a screen for Swenson all the way in, and Swenson blasted a snap shot past Lanigan’s glove to tie the game 1-1.
The Thunderbirds took the lead on a power-play goal with 1:50 remaining in the period. Delnov had a mini breakaway chance after the puck went through the feet of a Tigers defenseman. He faked the goalie to his right and lifted the puck high past his stick into the open net for his seventh goal of the season. Riley Sheen and Shea Theodore had the assists on the goal, as the T-Birds finished the period up 2-1.
Shots in the period were 14-8 in favor of the Thunderbirds, and the total after two periods was 25-23 Seattle.
Medicine Hat (11-11-1-0) tied the game 2-2 on a power play goal from Hunter Shinkaruk at 4:11 of the third period. Curtis Valk and Miles Koules had the assists.
Delnov scored the goal of the night to restore the one-goal lead for the T-Birds at 6:41. Goalie Brandon Glover got the puck to Jesse Forsberg who moved it to Delnov skating across the ice. He flew up the right boards and muscled past a Tigers defender before dragging the puck across the crease with his right hand. Lanigan tried to poke the puck away to no avail, leaving Delnov an open net to put it in for his second of the night.
Shinkaruk tied the game at three with 5:58 left in the third after Glover got a piece of his shot from the left circle.
Roberts Lipsbergs scored the game-winning goal less than two minutes later, however, after his turnaround shot went under Lanigan’s pads to make it 4-3 Seattle. Connor Honey’s shot rebounded off Lanigan and fell to Lipsbergs in the slot. He quickly pivoted to his forehand and let his shot rip. It was his fourth goal of the season, and the final one of the game coming at 15:57 of the third. Delnov had the other assist on the goal, giving him three points on the evening.
Shots in the third period were 14-12 in favor of Medicine Hat, and were 37-37 after the final whistle.
Seattle goalie Brandon Glover made 34 stops and improved his record to 9-7-1-0 for the season.
Lanigan made 33 saves on 37 shots and his record is now 9-4-0-0.
