KENT, August 23, 2018 – Eight players from the state of Washington are participating in the Seattle Thunderbirds 2018 Training Camp.
“It’s exciting to have so many Washington players at Training Camp this year,” said Cal Filson, T-Birds Director of Player Personnel. “All eight have worked hard and none of them are here just because they are from Washington. They all deserve to be here and having this many guys from the state shows how development of minor hockey players is steadily growing in the state of Washington.”
The eight players from the state are the most the T-Birds have ever had at a Training Camp.
T-Birds Training Camp opened on Wednesday, August 22, at accesso ShoWare Center with four scrimmages between four teams made up of 2002 and 2003 born players. The eight Washingtonians at Training Camp each skated in two of these scrimmages.
Andrew Alonzo, from Tacoma, played with the Seattle Junior Hockey Association 14U A1 team last season. Alonzo is a 2003 born right wing who is 5’8 and 147lbs. Alonzo is playing for Team Grey at Training Camp.
Keiton Klein, from Bellingham, played with the Everett Jr. Silvertips 16U team this past season and had eight goals and eight assists for 16 points in 17 games played. Klein is a 2002 born right wing who is 5’11 and weighs 177lbs. Klein is playing for Team Blue at Training Camp.
Trevor Loucks, from Marysville, played with the Seattle Junior Hockey Association 14U A1 team last season. Loucks is a 2003 born left wing who is 5’5 and 147lbs. Loucks is playing for Team White at Training Camp.
Koen Mueller, from Mukilteo, played with the Seattle Junior Hockey Association 14U A1 team this previous season. Mueller is a 2003 born defenseman who is 5’9 and weighs 148lbs. Mueller is playing for Team White at Training Camp. Koen is the son of former T-Bird Regan Mueller.
Adam Redding, from Spokane, played 25 games with the Coeur d’ Alene Hockey Academy Midget Prep team last season and had four assists. Redding is a 2003 born right wing who is 5’8 and 150lbs. Redding is playing for Team Grey at Training Camp. Adam is the younger brother of T-Birds Hockey Operations Coordinator Nick Redding.
Mekai Sanders, from Gig Harbor, played 20 games with the Compuware Bantam Major AAA team this past season and had six goals and 12 assists for 18 points. Sanders, a right wing, was drafted by the Thunderbirds in the ninth round of the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft and signed with the team on June 19, 2018. Sanders is 5’9 and weighs 155lbs. Sanders is playing for Team White at Training Camp.
Tyson Shaw, from Auburn, played with the Seattle Junior Hockey Association 14U A1 team last season. Shaw is a 2003 born defenseman who is 6’0 and weighs 160lbs. Shaw is playing for Team Blue at Training Camp. Tyson is the son of former T-Bird Lloyd Shaw.
Tyler Waram, from Edmonds, played with the Seattle Junior Hockey Association 14U A1 team last season. Waram is a 2003 born defenseman who is 5’11 and weighs 161lbs. Waram is playing for Team Blue at Training Camp.
Training Camp continues on Thursday, August 23, with four scrimmages between the four teams of 2002 and 2003 born players. All eight Washingtonians will play in two of these scrimmages. The morning scrimmages will be at 9:00am and 10:45am. The evening session will feature a third place vs. fourth place scrimmage at 4:30pm and a first place vs. second place scrimmage at 6:15pm.
The sessions on August 22 and August 23 will be 60-minute run time scrimmages and have an ice cut after 30 minutes.
The scrimmages on Friday, August 24, will include all players at Training Camp. There will be three scrimmage sessions at accesso ShoWare Center which are at 3pm, 4pm and 5pm and will feature three teams.
The scrimmages scheduled for Saturday, August 25, currently have three teams scheduled to play, Team Blue, Team White and Team Grey. They will start their scrimmages at 9am and it will consist of 30-minute run time games, with a 15-minute warmup.
Sunday, August 26, is the last day of Training Camp and will feature a full 60-minute three period game. The teams will be wearing T-Birds white and blue game jerseys, unlike previous scrimmages which will feature team branded practice jerseys. The game starts at 5:30pm at accesso ShoWare Center.
All Training Camp scrimmages and the Blue White game are open to the public free of charge. Fans attending any of the scrimmages or Blue White game should enter accesso ShoWare Center from the east side of the building.
The Thunderbirds will play seven exhibition games prior to the start of the 2018-2019 regular season.
The T-Birds start the preseason at the Delta Hotels Preseason Classic in Everett. They will play their first game at the Classic against the Vancouver Giants on Friday, August 31, at 11:30am. Classic play will continue the following day as the T-Birds face the Everett Silvertips Saturday, September 1 at 7pm. The Classic ends for the T-Birds on Sunday, September 2, as they play the Spokane Chiefs at 3pm.
Preseason play continues for the T-Birds at the Red Lion Hotels’ Preseason Tournament at the Toyota Center in Kennewick. The T-Birds will begin the tournament on Thursday, September 6, against the Spokane Chiefs at 3pm. Tournament play will conclude on Friday, September 7 with a matchup against the Kootenay Ice at 3pm.
The T-Birds wrap up preseason play with back-to-back games against the Everett Silvertips. They will play on Tuesday, September 11, at 7:05pm at accesso ShoWare Center. The T-Birds will travel to Angel of the Winds Arena on Saturday, September 15, to play the Silvertips at 7:05pm in their final preseason game. Tickets for the home preseason game are now on sale.
The T-Birds start the 2018-19 Western Hockey League regular season against the Portland Winterhawks on Saturday, September 22 at 6:05pm at the ShoWare Center.
